Citizens’ statement on use of dangerous instruments in public

We the undersigned are greatly concerned by the demonstration on Tuesday by Maoist youths using sharp-edged rods and poles, as well as attacks on citizens carried out using such instruments. In our experience, sharp-edged rods and poles are akin to weaponry in the context of public demonstrations, and their use by forces that claim to have entered peaceful politics are to be condemned in the strongest terms.

As is well known, there are ongoing attempts to promote dialogue between the main political parties in the Constituent Assembly in order to end the present deadlock in constitution-writing. In the view of the undersigned, demonstrations like those of Tuesday can jeapordise the attempts at dialogue by further distancing the political forces.

We strongly object to all attempts to terrorise the public through the use of violence or threat of violence. We appeal to all concerned to desist from actions that generate fear and anxiety among the populace, and anything that will impact the goals of consensus and cooperation among the political forces.
